The Kings Knights 8th grade football team got off to a roaring and storm shortened start Wednesday as they dominated the Braves from Talawanda. Coach Bedinghaus had the Knightlings running on all cylinders when the game was called with 6 minutes to go in the 3rd quarter with Kings ahead 16 – 6 and driving for another score.
The game began with a deep coverage breakdown which allowed the Braves to strike first. The two point try was thwarted and the Knights took the field and not only recovered quickly but went on to dominate both sides of the line of scrimmage.
This year’s offense closely resembles the offense of the Big Knights, but has a few more wrinkles thanks to Coach John Carabinas. The Knight Offensive Line took control of the line of scrimmage from the first snap of the ball. Cunningham, Bauer, Firstenberger, Crabtree and Morgan, although smaller than the Braves across from them, simply dominated this opponent. It was good old fashioned trench warfare with the Knights doing the knocking. During the first half of play the offensive line enabled a host of Kings backs to pile up over 146 yards on the ground and 22 in the air. This with a 65 yard scamper called back and a 40 yard bomb jostled from the hands of a Knights receiver.
With the line handling the heavy lifting 4 different Kings back were able to chew up the yardage. Matt Sannella was able to pound away between the guards for 22 yards on 4 carries. Michael Ovington slashed his way to 26 yards on 4 carries, one for a 2 point conversion. Ray Brewster scampered for another 9 yards on 2 carries and Jack Olds was able to follow the blocking of the big guys for 84 yards on 7 carries to account for one Touchdown and one 2 point conversion. Quarterback Ryan McGuire ran this smooth offense and while he picked up 5 yards on two carries, his bigger contribution was hitting 2 of 3 passes for 22 yards, one Touchdown and one two point conversion.
The Knights defense, with the exception of the early miscue, bottled up all attempts made by the Braves. Eight of the young Knights recorded tackles and demonstrated the ability to swarm to the football. The second half started with a Braves fumble forced by Joel Burns and recovered by Chris Addis. Just as the Knights were gearing up for another attempt at the goal line, the game was called for lightning. It is hoped that the rest of the game can be played later in the season.
Next up the Knights travel to Walnut Hills.
On August 27th, our 7th grade Kings Knights supplied a very strong scrimmage against the Fairfield Indians. We started on offense, scoring on two of the first three plays with 40 yard runs. Overall, the running game was very strong, racking up well over 100 yards. The offensive line delivered all day, contributing to a passing touchdown, in addition to the rushing scores. The offense achieved positive yardage on over 70% of their plays. The defense also demonstrated their prowess with 7 tackles for losses, crushing hits, and an interception. Our Knights defense dominated the Indians during their offensive last series, resulting in negative 23 yards in 5 plays. While there are still some rough spots to iron out, the 7th graders looked good in their first outing. We’re looking forward to a great season!
