Knights win FAVC Cardinal Division Championship in Dominating Fashion

No-one could have predicted the dominating performance in which Kings disposed of Turpin in a 35-10 route of the Spartans on their home turf.

Had anyone told you that…

Jamire Westbrook would rush for 231 yards and score 4 touchdowns.

Jensen Gephardt would direct the offense and have a TD pass of his own while Jonny Brewster stood on the sideline with an injury.

The Knights defense would hold Turpin to a total of 7-first downs, 167 total yards and record 5 sacks.

The Knights would put 35 points on the #2 team in the state coming into the game.

… would you have believed it?

The Knights didn’t just win the FAVC Championship in the Cardinal Division they TOOK it!

Kings defense rose up early as they have several times this season and caused a turnover early in the first quarter when Austin Copeland pounced on Turpin’s Will Stocker’s fumble setting up the Knights with first and goal on the Turpin 21 yard line.

A few plays later Jamire Westbrook crossed the goal line for his first of four touchdowns of the night as Spartan fans sat in the stands silenced like a mime convention.

The Knights would score again at the 7:39 minute mark on the second quarter thanks to some fantastic blocking of the offensive line that opened holes on four consecutive running plays as the Knights marched 63 yards to pay dirt.  Westbrook compiled all 63-yards on the drive with a 49 yard burst on one carry but you don’t get that kind of running room without your hogs blocking for you in the pits.

Spencer Rosekrans stepped in front of a Conner Jensen pass on Turpin’s next possession setting up a beautiful touchdown strike from Jensen Gebhardt to Jermard Lewis that covered 54 yards and before people standing in line to get a hot dog and drink could get back to their seats.  Knights led 21-0 with 7:12 to go in the second quarter.

Once the Knights put 21 points on the Spartans you could tell the air had been taken out of them.  True there was another half of football to be played but when an opponent comes into your house and punches you in the mouth the way the Knights had done to the Spartans it would have been difficult for any team to recover and as the final score would show the Spartans didn’t.

No disrespect to Turpin as they came into the game with 19 of the players with some type of injury with the most devastating being to their starting QB Eric Martin and WR Whitfield who are out for the season.  The Spartans fought hard and until the final horn sounded but this night belonged to the Knights who struggled through a 3-7 season last year to turn it around and win the Cardinal Division of the FAVC.

Congrats to the Knights on their accomplishments and for displaying respect, honor and integrity all season long to their opponents and each other.

During the game at Walnut Hills a referee had said “Coach I have never seen a more respectable group of players in my life.  Your kids have had plays go against them tonight and whether they had a right to complain or not they never opened their mouth and complained, they just played the game.”

That is one of the many things that sets Kings football apart from many teams and why they deserve what they have accomplished this season.
