The Knights overcame Senior Night emotions and a tough Wilmington team to improve their record to 8-1 with a 23-0 win.  Only Turpin remains on their regular season schedule and will determine playoff seeding.

Wilmington was everything they were advertised to be on the defensive side of the ball and unlike the past three games where the Knights scored in the first two minutes of each game they were held scoreless in this matchup until the 4:21 minute mark of the 2nd quarter.

Jonny Brewster hit Jamire Westbrook on a 12-yard TD pass culminating an 11 play, 78 yard drive which led to the first and only score for either team in the first half.

It was evident at half time with the Knights leading 8-0 that the offense would need to get rolling or Wilmington would start to believe and you don’t want an opponent to believe they can win a game because more often than not they do at your expense.  Point in fact was earlier this year when the Knights should have beaten Harrison but the Wildcats determined that night they would write their own ending by handing Kings their only loss of the season.

As the Knights have done all year they came out in the third quarter and jumped on the Hurricanes.  Kings has had a season in which the offense has made their living jumping on teams coming out in the second half on both sides of the ball.  So whatever the halftime speeches are in the locker room they must be golden based on how this team reacts.

Nick Bird slipped behind the linebackers for Wilmington and caught a well thrown ball from Brewster, then turning on his after burners and running more like a Road Runner than just any bird, he left them in his dust as he raced 54 yards into the end zone with less than a minute gone in the third quarter.  Kings led 15-0.

Less than three minutes later the Knights would strike again when Brian Huffman took the hand off, broke through the line, side stepped a would be tackler and then headed for the end zone like a run away train.  Fifty-eight yards later Huffman made the score 22-0 and the extra point by Evan Berg ended the scoring 23-0.

The rest of the game was a good defensive battle between both teams.  Wilmington could be proud that they kept such a high powered offense out of the end zone for the rest of the game and the Knights didn’t bend the rest of the game.

It was a good sign that the Knights offense continued to execute while the defense added another shut out to their season.  Often it is easy for an opponent to jump on you right away on a night like senior night or if you are looking ahead to a big game like the one coming up against Turpin.  As has been the point all year Coach Olds and his staff appear to have the players focused and playing mature football.

It is for all the marbles on Friday night against Turpin so please come out and support your team.
