Game Recap: Knights Slay the Tigers of Loveland 29-0 in a Dominating Performance

(Contributed by Bret Sims)

At times the Knights looked unstoppable while at others they looked lost and out of sync on offense but overall it was a performance to make any Knights’ fan or coach proud as the beat Loveland in all facets of the game.  The 29-0 demolishing of the Tigers possibly sent a message to next week’s Homecoming opponent Glen Este that they are in for a long night.

Evan Berg showed his big leg when he hit a 40-yard field goal in the first quarter to open the scoring for the Knights.  Berg would end the night by tacking on additional field goals of 39 and 31 yards.  For those of you taking notes at home this kind of distance seen at the high school level, especially for a sophomore, clearly shows DIV I college talent and possibly beyond.

On their next scoring drive the Knights would do a great job of running the ball down the throats of the Tigers.  Justin Crull, Jamire Westbrook, Jonny Brewster and Brian Huffman teamed up to go 52 yards in 10 plays, capped off on a 3-yard plunge by Westbrook.  Westbrook would finish the night with 162 yards on 29 carries and 3 touchdowns with his longest being a 28-yard romp.  It is easy to see why the University of Cincinnati offered him a full scholarship after his sophomore.  Of course anyone who has watched football knows that a RB is only as good as his offensive line and the Knights offensive line has been downright OFFENSIVE to their opponents this year opening the holes for anyone carrying the rock on a Kings uniform.

When the Knights jumped out to a 16-0 lead at the 1:19 minute mark in the first quarter signs of Loveland fans leaving began to show up as you could actually see people heading for the exit.  I think it is fair to say that most people who predicted a win for Kings couldn’t have expected the game to be dominated the way it was.  It was a great game for Brian Huffman for broke the century mark on some hard running on quick hitters that would net him 103 yards.  Brian is the blue collar RB that people sometimes overlook but trust me when I say he is just as likely to take it to the house when he gets an opening as anyone.

Kings offense seemed to be disoriented in the 2nd quarter as it bogged down time and time again.  Breakdowns in protection resulted in rushed throws that weren’t helped when the receivers dropped the balls that Brewster got to them.  With that said it was time for the Knights defense to shine which was capped at the end of the first half on an interception by Justin Crull that broke the backs of the Tigers just as they looked like they might actually get on the score board.

Coach Olds and his staff must have had a speech equal to that of the great Vince Lombardi or they pulled at the heartstrings like a clip from the movie “Rudy” but whatever the Kings came out in the third quarter and on the opening drive sent a message to Loveland and everyone wearing Tiger gear “Go home and catch some tv or maybe catch up on some cleaning because this game is over.  The Knights went 65 yards on the opening drive to take a 23-0 lead and the game was pretty much over at that point.

Both teams exchanged field position for most of the second half and as mentioned earlier Evan Berg would finish the scoring with his 2nd and 3rd field goal of the game for the final 29-0 routing.
