Game Recap:

On a crisp Sunday night, the Knights traveled north to face FAVC rival Wilmington at Wilmington College.

After receiving the opening kickoff, the Knights’ offense sputtered and was forced to punt after only 1 first down.

Aided by a horse collar personal foul, the Hurricanes moved the ball into Knights’ territory on their first possession.  Kings’ safety, Jamire Westbrook then leveled the Hurricane quarterback forcing a fumble which was recovered by senior Trey Knecht.  Unfortunately the Knights were unable to capitalize and punted a second time.

Wilmington took over on their own 22 yard line and began to move the ball down the field behind the running of their featured running back.  The Kings’ defense again came up large with an interception in the end zone by Zach Bashear.  However again the Knights were forced into a 3 and out.

The Hurricanes took over in Knights’ territory, eventually pushing into the end zone to begin the 2nd quarter with the score 7-0 Wilmington.

On their next possession, the Knights pushed into Hurricane territory, but the drive ended abruptly with a Jonny Brewster interception in the end zone.

Wilmington methodically moved the ball on the ground across the field, capping their drive with a 6 yard run into the Knights’ end zone, stretching their lead to 14-0.

Kings received the Hurricane squib kick and began the drive at their own 45 yard line.  Again the Knights’ scoring hopes were dashed when Wilmington intercepted the ball.

Blake Bates returned the favor on Wilmington’s next drive by picking off a pass, setting up the Knights with a short field.

With Jensen Gebhardt under center Kings finally struck pay dirt with a 27 yard touchdown pass to Justin Crull to cut the score to 14-7 at the half.

The 3rd quarter began with a Knights’ kickoff which was promptly returned 88 yards for a Hurricane touchdown, making the score 21-7.

After a 3 and out series and a fine punt from Zach Hilderbrand pinning the Hurricanes on their own 12 yard line, Wilmington once again relied on their running game, marching down the field to the Knights’ 5 yard line.  Spencer Rosekrans then broke up a 4th down pass play forcing the Hurricanes to turn the ball over on downs.

On the following series, the Knights were again thwarted in their scoring efforts and were forced to punt, setting Wilmington up with a short field.  The Hurricanes struck quickly with a touchdown pass, extending their lead to 28-7.

The Knights finally saw the end zone again on their next effort behind the ground game of Westbrook.  Brian Huffman took the ball to the promised land on a 1 yard run cutting the lead to 28-14.

Kings hoped the element of surprise in the form of an onside kick would propel them to another score, but the ball only traveled 9 yards resulting in yet another short field for Wilmington.  The ground game again did the Knights in as the Hurricanes scored for the final time, resulting in a 35-14 Wilmington victory.
