You couldn’t ask for a better Knight for football (for the 4th straight week). There wasn’t a cloud in the sky and the Kings fans came out en masse to support the Knights in their 2nd home game of the season.
On the opening kick off the Knights got a first down but soon the drive stalled and the Knights were forced to punt the ball away to the Tigers.
Starting at the Knights 49 yard line the Tigers took 5 plays to draw first blood and take an early 7-0 lead.
Kings took their second possession and got a first down on a 15 yard run by Jamire Westbrook. Unfortunately the Knights offense then stalled out and they were forced to punt for a second time.
Loveland then marched down the field exclusively on the ground and pounded out a 12 play 70 yard drive that increased their lead to 14-0 after the PAT.
Kings finally got their offense going behind the running of Westbrook (40 yds on the drive) to move deep into Tiger territory. Then Jonny Brewster hit Westbrook with a shovel pass and Westbrook scampered to his left through the Tigers defense to take the rock to the castle to cut the Tiger lead to 14-7.
Looking to take the offense momentum and translate it to defense, the Knights forced the Tigers into a 4th and 6 from the Knights 26 yard line. Kings flushed the Loveland quarterback outside but missed tackles by Blake Bates and Tommy Schnee allowed him to escape and run down the sideline for a deflating touchdown to increase the Tigers lead to 20-7.
With the Knights reeling they mounted a valiant drive down the field behind the running and passing of quarterback Brewster. A pass to a wide open Bates was dropped to end the drive and the first half with Loveland leading 20-7.
To start the second half the Tigers received the opening kickoff and struck quickly with a 2 play 72 yard drive highlighted by a 65 yard touchdown run to push their lead to 27-7.
The Knights’ pass on the first play of the next possession was intercepted and returned to the house to increase the Tigers lead to 34-7.
After trading punts the Knights took possession at midfield. Starting strong with a 23 pass completion to Nick Bird followed by a 10 yard run by Westbrook, Brewster scrambled 22 yards into the end zone making the score 34-14 to end the 3rd quarter.
Loveland capped the scoring for the night with a 6 play 69 yard drive making the final score 41-14.
On a sad note senior tackle Kyle Kreutz was lost for the season when he re-injured his surgically repaired labrum in the middle of the 2nd quarter.
Knights’ offensive leaders were Westbrook 111 yards on 15 carries; Brewster 12-24 for 108 yards with 1 touchdown and 2 interceptions; Westbrook with 8 catches for 51 yards.
Knights’ defensive leaders were Drew Esler with 8.5 tackles and Austin Copeland with 6.5 tackles.
The Knights take on #1 ranked Winton Woods in a tough road contest. We need the fans to come out and support the team in this tough battle
