On a beautiful night for football, Kings kicked off their 2009 home season against the Harrison Wildcats. Kings received the opening kickoff and drove down the field, but stalled at the Harrison 32 yard line and turned the ball over on downs.
Harrison took possession and scored with a 68 yard touchdown run on their first play from scrimmage. This would prove to be an unfortunate indication of things to come.
On Kings’ second possession, the Knights’ offense showed no life and was forced to punt after just 3 plays.
Harrison methodically drove down the field, capping off a 14 play, 63 yard drive with a touchdown, pushing the score to 14-0.
On the next kickoff, the Kings returner took the ball out to the 25 yard line and the offense took over. Unfortunately, on the third play of the drive, Kings quarterback Jonny Brewster threw an interception that was returned for another Harrison touchdown. The score then stood at 21-0.
Once again, Kings received the kickoff but Jamire Westbrook, the Kings’ return man, fumbled on the return and the ball is recovered by the Wildcats on the Knights’ 32 yard line. The Kings’ defense rose to the occasion and stuffed the Wildcats, forcing a 4th down incompletion.
Behind the running of Westbrook, who had 49 yards on the drive, the Knights took the ball across the field and finally put some points on the board. The Knights scored on a 15 yard, 4th down pass from Brewster to WR Blake Bates, making the score 21-7 Harrison.
Harrison responded with a 10 play, 79 yard touchdown drive of their own, increasing their lead to 28-7 with a 14 yard touchdown pass.
Kings’ 2 minute offense drove down the field and got the field goal unit within scoring distance, but K Evan Berg pulled the 37 yard attempt wide left. The score at halftime: 28-7 Harrison.
Kings came out to the start the second half fired up, forcing a 3 and out from Harrison. However, returner Drew Esler was separated from the ball on the punt and Harrison resumes their offense on the Kings’ 11 yard line. The Wildcats capitalize on the opportunity, scoring on the first play from scrimmage. Their lead widened to 35-7.
Kings took the kickoff and was unable to jump start their offense, punting away again. 2 plays later, Harrison ran up the middle for a 37 yard touchdown, making the score 42-7.
Kings started their next drive and finally began to march down the field on the Wildcat defense. A 2nd down WR screen to Justin Crull, who broke 3 tackles on the run, resulted in a 45 yard touchdown for the Knights, making the score 42-14.
Kings stopped Harrison on their next possession, forcing a rare punt. But, the past repeats itself as Westbrook muffs the punt and the Wildcats recover. Eventually, the seemingly unstoppable Harrison offense punches the ball into the endzone, swelling their lead to 49-14.
Kings started the 4th quarter by moving the ball downfield, aided by a 43 yard screen pass to Westbrook. 2 plays later, Westbrook caps off the drive by running 7 yards into the endzone, and the Knights crawled closer, 49-21.
The Knights’ defense again stepped up and forced another Harrison punt. The Knights scored quickly with a 31 yard touchdown pass to Bates. The score then stood at 49-28, which would end up being the final score for the game.
The offensive leaders for the Knights were Westbrook with 108 rushing yards and 1 touchdown, and Brewster who was 12-20 with 183 yards, 3 TD’s and 1 INT. Defensively, the Knights were lead by OLB Sean Horan with 10.5 tackles and S Zach Hilderbrand with 6 tackles.
