It was a beautiful night to play football at Talawanda.  The Knights were looking to even their record at 1-1 to start the season.  The defense knew they needed to step up their game with the knowledge that their leader, senior captain Billy Bruns would not be able to suit up for the game.  Later the Knights were dealt a devastating blow with the news that Billy would be lost for the season.

On the opening kickoff the Knights set the tone for the evening with a bone-jarring tackle by senior captain Drew Esler which led to the first of many Talawanda punts.

On Kings’ first possession they drove down the field but the drive stalled and the Knights settled for a 32 yard field goal by Evan Berg.

Talawanda took the next possession and drove down deep into Kings territory but their efforts were thwarted by a Zach Hilderbrand interception at the Kings 18 yard line.

Kings methodically drove down the field behind the running of Jamire Westbrook

(23 yards on the drive) and a key 32 yard reception by Jamard Lewis.  Their efforts put the Knights in business at the Talawanda 12 yard line.  Three plays later, Westbrook punched into the end zone from 1 yard out making the score 10-0 Kings.

Kings held on the next Talawanda possession forcing another punt.  The Knights took over at their own 40 yard line, but the drive ended abruptly with a Jonny Brewster interception deep in the Talawanda endzone.

Kings’ defensive line led by seniors Jake Gibson (7 tackles), Trey Knecht and Matt Koerbel stood tough and forced Talawanda to turn the ball over on downs.  The Knights took a knee to send the game to the half with a 10-0 lead.

Zach Brashear took the 2nd half kickoff and ran it back 28 yards to the Knights 36 yard line.  Unfortunately nothing came of the drive and the Knights were forced to punt.

For the rest of the 3rd quarter both defenses stiffened up and neither team was able to muster any points.

Highlights of the 4th quarter included a Trey Knecht forced fumble and interceptions by Spencer Rosekrans and Mason Barker.  The Knights’ defense continued to play tough and kept Talawanda off the scoreboard to preserve a 10-0 shutout.

The Knights’ defense held Talwanda to a total of 132 yards.  What was most impressive, however, was that the Braves had -2 yards for the evening on the ground.  The offense was led by Westbrook rushing for 88 yards on 16 carries and Brewster passing for 140 yards.

Kings looks to build on their first win of the season against a physical Harrison team in the home opener on Friday night.
